ECHO PORTUGAL
A focused 90-day experience.
For some young adults, Portugal is part of a gap year or a pause before college or work. For others, life has become complicated, and they need some distance from familiar routines to reconnect with themselves. There is support here, but there is also a lot of life: new places, shared meals, long conversations, quiet afternoons, challenges, laughter, and time to consider what they might want to do differently when they return home.
Format
Cohort-based, typically 2–3 groups each year
Focus
Travel, cultural immersion, therapy, mentoring, wellness, Echo curriculum, relationships, and shared responsibility
Discover Echo Portugal
There is support here, but there is also a lot of life. Shared meals at the farmhouse, new places, cultural experiences, friendships, challenges, and laughter. Take a closer look at Echo Portugal and how travel, community, and therapeutic support come together in this unique 90-day experience.
HOME BASE + TRAVEL
Somewhere familiar to return to, and plenty to step into.
Home Base
The farmhouse gives participants a consistent place to come back to throughout the 90 days. Time there may include therapy, Foundations workshops, mentoring, shared meals, exercise, family connection, rest, and everyday responsibilities. Then the group heads back out.
Travel
Participants experience cities, coastlines, rural communities, markets, historic sites, food, language, nature, and everyday Portuguese culture. Depending on the season, activities may include surfing, hiking, kayaking, sailing, horseback riding, volunteering, or simply navigating a new place together.
Travel brings novelty. Home base brings consistency. Both are part of the experience.
LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIENCE
One of the gifts of travel is getting to be a beginner again.
Plans change. The food is unfamiliar. You have to ask for help, work through a disagreement, or try something you're not immediately good at. You're homesick one day and having the best day of the trip two days later.
For young adults who have been feeling stuck, these experiences can be surprisingly useful. Through Echo's Foundations curriculum and the support of mentors and therapists, participants begin making connections between what they're experiencing and what they're learning about themselves.
Little by little, they begin to discover what they're capable of. They learn that they can handle unfamiliar situations, work through challenges, build relationships, and recover when things don't go as planned. Those experiences can build confidence that stays with them long after they return home.
A GOOD FIT FOR PORTUGAL
Portugal can make sense at several different points in a young adult’s life.
It may be part of a gap year, a pause before returning to college, a transition after another therapeutic experience, or a chance to step away from routines that no longer feel useful.
Some participants are navigating anxiety, depression, executive-functioning challenges, neurodivergence, relationship difficulties, stress, or low confidence. Others may simply want more support than independent travel or a traditional gap-year program provides.
A participant does not need to be naturally adventurous, athletic, extroverted, or an experienced traveler. They do need enough emotional, behavioral, and physical stability to travel internationally and participate safely in a small community, along with some willingness to engage, build relationships, and try unfamiliar things.

LOOKING AHEAD
The next step can look different for everyone.
Some participants return to college, work, home, or a longer gap-year plan. Others decide they want continued support through Echo Idaho, Echo Utah, or another appropriate setting.
Portugal is not designed to map out someone’s entire future in 90 days.
It is meant to create enough space, support, and new experience for a young adult to return to everyday life with a stronger sense of themselves and greater clarity about what they want to do next.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS
“Living in a different country gave me a chance to reset, take a break from everything, and really work on myself. Being part of a small community helped me learn more about who I am, what I’m passionate about, and what I want for my future.”

ONE ECHO, A DIFFERENT SETTING

Echo Portugal shares the same developmental philosophy as Idaho and Utah, while using travel, cultural immersion, small-group living, and a defined 90-day timeframe in its own way.
